1983 40 Hp mercury

I have a 1983 40 hp merc. I was motoring down the lake and the volts jumped up to 17 volts, I thought that was weird but kept going. When I got to my fishing hole I motored down and the motor died instantly. When I was going to leave the motor would not start, it is getting lots of fuel, any ideas? Any help would be great.

Normally, your charging system has nothing to do with running the motor--it will run without the battery--but your stator may have burnt up, taking the tgnition coils with it. The flywheel needs to come off to see.

Thanks for the help, I'll pull the flywheel off this week and have a look. Can I check all of these things with a ohm meter? Or do I need a special tester?

the stator, charge coils and rectifier can be tested with an ohm meter without removing the flywheel, but it is best to take a look with the flywheel off. Your 83 model has 2 different type of stator/charge coils, a 1 piece unit and a 2 piece assembly. The only way to change them is with the flywheel off. On my 83 40hp, one of the wire clamps broke loose under the flywheel and took out the charge coils, it was stuck to the flywheel magnet and kept wackin it. To remove the flywheel look for the 2 bolts with split washers on the head, 7/16 I think, in a circle around the main nut. Put a puller on those 2 with hardend polts, use good bolts so they dont strip.....jb

Took my flywheel off and did all the test I could. I tested Stator, trigger, coils. Everything seems to be good(all within specs on my meter). How do I check the switch box? Any other advice on how to figure this out would be great.

I am looking into getting a DVA multimeter, there is one on ebay but I am not sure if it's any good. Anyone have any tips about buying one?
