1983 115HP Johnson wont stay on

Hello everyone :D, new here to the forum and forums in general. I have had this outboard for quite some time never had any issues with it.....until now. I was out at Elephant butte when my outboard stalled, it seemed unusual but it started right back up. By the end of out trip I proceeded to flush my outboard like I would any other day, except this time around it wont start.....it will start only if the motor is tilted absolutely all the way up in the air with no problems, but as soon as I tilt it down it stalls almost immediately, it sounds simple but I thought id ask for some opinions. Could it be fuel related? I was going to take it to the experts, but it seems like it could be something so simple maybe something I could fix myself... yet don't know where to start. Ideas?:confused:
 
Although it (at first) seems like a fuel (flooding) problem,... as suggested above, check the compression first, then the spark.

Remove "all" spark plugs.

When standing in back of the engine, facing the spark plugs, the cylinders on that V4 are numbered as follows:
2.....1
4.....3

What are the actual compression psi readings of the individual cylinders?

The spark should jump a 7/16" air gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it?

Do not reply with generalities such as the spark is strong, great, and the compression is okay. Information such as that doesn't tell us anything.
 
so i wanted to give an update, i decided to buy the repair manual.....and the troubleshooting led to the needle and seats/floats. turns out my needle and seats were just to old, as the floats raised the needles wouldn't close in result flooding the carbs....and I assume the reason the motor would run perfectly fine when it was tilted is because it would overflow through the air silencer fuel overflow hose, gave it a clean, new gaskets, new floats, new needles and seats....and its running back to normal now. I appreciate all the help here, I spent a total of $46 on rebuilding the carbs way less than what I would have spent at the shop, and $32 on the repair manual but I feel it was worth it
