"I was about to buy a 1982 Mercury 40 HP 2 cly. and my friend tells me that the 40 HP model had a bad record. Hard to hand start,- breaking crankshafts,- and did not stay tuned to well. Is this good information or just an old man making noise????. The motor runs good in the tank, and looks clean on the outside and under the cowl.

I have run 1967 Mercury 35 HP for over 30 yrs on the same old crestliner, but the compresson is getting low on the bottom cly. and local mechanic tells me that parts to rebuild the 35 may not be avalible.???

Any help on the 40 HP would be much appricated. David"

The parts are readily availabl

The parts are readily available. Buy the 82--if it's in good shape--and have the 35 rebuilt when you get around to it.

"The 40hp and late 35hp (s

"The 40hp and late 35hp (same engine) will break a crank or wear out the crankshaft splines due to a bad lower bearing. Anyone with any skill would hear it going bad before its to late. They also like to break the starter mount on the front case. Original design didn't have a lower bracket and the starter would loosen and crack the front case. A revised lower bracket was issued but is a pain to remove/install. I have a 40 and a 35, been running the 83 40hp for years."
