Hey all, I'm new here. Quick background on me is, I'm a long, long time GM tech with an interest in 2 stroke Mercs. The engine in question is a 1982 Merc 150. It was my dad's boat ( 82' Procraft 1750 fish and ski) so a bit of sentimental value. Now on to the meat of it. Was trying new prop out ( Fury 22 pitch) ...fantastic prop by the way. Started hearing a mid rpm misfire around 3k to 3500k. Also heard what sounded like a coil arcing ( navy blue coils). Got back home and checked over things...noticed stator, trigger, and coil signal wires all in poor shape (insulation cracking and swollen), so I decided to replace stator, trigger and wiring. Also checked coils...had 2 that were burned in HT receptacle. Here is where I made my huge mistake: I got sucked in to the low priced Chinese units all over amazon. I installed the new stator, trigger, and coils and immediately picked up an extended ir even no start. Checked with DVA and found low output from stator. Also...and this is odd...cylinder number 5 was hyper firing at idle....timing light would go almost solid white and read 7 to 9k. Only on cyl. 5. I've since replace all the low ball crap with the correct Merc pieces and she's back to normal. One exception...the 2 burned coils....I decided to try Arco Marine coils.....they ohm out different(lower on secondary side) but seem to work just fine. Sorry for the long winded intro guys....but the lesson I learned was stay away from the alluring and inexpensive outboard ignition parts on amazon.....they seem great....until you actually go to use them. Merc parts are expensive but to give example, every part I took off motor to replace was original 1982 Mercury. And they still test good. The only other mod I've done is CCM reeds.....love'em....thanks all
