1982 mariner/yamaha 40 hp key switch wiring.

Have a 1982 40hp mariner/yamaha with external key switch wires, Got it for 225.00 heard it run via pull start, started right up. picked up a mercury key switch with push to choke. Wire colors dont match. I dont want to burn any thing up ,because it does run good. just want to be able to turn the key. Switch wires are red, black, violet, black w yellow , yellow w red, yellow w black.. 6 wires on key switch.. Now for the engine harness , red, black, yellow, green, blue, white, brown,. The harness has 7 wires. can anyone help me with this . I tried to follow the wires but got nervous, I would burn something up. Thank you .​
 
Red accessory key on wire. Black ground. Violet or purple constant power. Black yellow kill switch. Yellow red neutral safety yellow black not sure
Engine harness black ground yellow?? Green and blue is trim up trim down. Brown temperature. White? Grey is tach
Engine designed for electric start?? Starter and charging already set up ??
 
Cancel not very accurate some models use diff wires colors . what is serial #
Is there not 8 pin harness or r u cutting in to that??
 
When looking at Mariners,first thing to consider is,are you in Europe,Asia or Austriala?After that,if not made in USA,then,is it's a case of "Made in Japan". If that's the case it's a Yamaha.Look for Yamaha wiring. When I'm sober,I'll come back to you.
 
Thanks Havaclue, Sorry I didnt get right back to you. I think I may just sell it the way it is. I thought it would sell better and at a higher $$$ if I could just hit the switch. It starts with the pull cord. But thats the main reason I got it so cheap, The guy had a hard time starting it when I looked at it. Only gave $200.00 for it, Have any Idea what its worth??? thanks Ed

Key Switch Engine Harness
Red-----------------Red------- 12V +
Black---------------Black-------Ground
Violet (purple)------Yellow------12V Ign
Black/Yellow--------White-------Kill Circuit
Yellow/Red----------Brown------Start Circuit
Yellow/Black--------Blue---------Choke Circuit
Green--------Tach wire...Goes to tach and not to key switch

No ifs, buts or maybes... Thats how they go....

I have been scanning the internet for this answer, And it seems like this is one big mistery that no one wants to touch. And I have looked every where. It looks like it is a common problem too. First my apologies for not getting back to you in the morning,I would have had to dig out my drawings.But tonyaus got them for you.He's right,people who haven't a clue shouldn't post.;)
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Mariner/parts.html .Here is a link to Yamaha/Mariner 40HP. Start at 40A (above prop exhaust) to 40C (twin carb w- auto blend). You'll need your number to pinpoint the exact year and model.
The reason it's difficult to find info on the Yamaha/Mariner is that most sites are US based.
Yamaha built Mariners for Mercury,from the '70s through to '92-'93, up to 60HP. They were copies of older Yamahas,painted gray and sold as Mariner.
You can't find much about pre '84 Yamaha.As,again,most sites are US based and info only goes back to '84,which is no use if you want parts from a '78 40 to fit your '82 Mariner 40.
 
Here's a few things that may help. It may also help to get a Yamaha key switch.

Thank you everyone for the replies, I hooked the key switch up with a fresh batt. and I get nothing. Wont even pull start with the keyswitch ON or OFF. I disconnect the key switch and it pull starts second pull , Just dont get it. Any ideas?? Thanks Ed
