Hey all, first poster here. Im from Australia and this 82model savage lancer 530 with a Johnson v4 seahorse 90hp is my first boat. Since becoming her new owner I've noticed a few things.

1/ starts first go every time, but; when I head out I usually put the hose on it in the morning and warm it up for a min or so before I go. When I get to the ramp and launch, it runs straight up. But, when I haven't done this I've had to really run the fast idle through her for a min or so in the water to get it to get up and running. I can just kick it over and stroll off slowly or it may die.
2/ I can stop and start her as normal when kicking aroundthe lake, but the last time I done it, it would kick over and stop. So I managed to kick it over and quickly throw the throttle tab from fast idlers run and get in gear to motor off.
3/ thirdly and it's happened once only, it surged in speed when travelling then over compensated and spiked in speed. Almost like a fuel block then it then just dumped it all at once?!?

These maybe all the norm for two stoke relics like this.....I was advised that it may be a fuel pump. Is there a way I can check or replace it to see???

Any feed back to help, or similar stories or a how to would be great to read.

Also can anyone point me into the right direction is possible to a 1982 v4 seahorse 90hp manual online?!? Can find some 1981 and 1986 ones on eBay but can anybody verify if this includes my specific motor?

Thanks, Luke

Take a compression test first.--Then check

for spark that will jump a gap of 1 cm or more on each plug wire.

Done a compression test few weeks ago and all was good. Explain how to check for the plug gap spark so I do it correctly. What will be proved by viewing the spark plug sparking over 1cm gap?

Cheers for reading and replying.

Using an open air spark tester set at 1cm you are verifying that it will spark under compression; holding the plug next to the engine block is not sufficient. Good luck
