I recently purchased an old fishing boat with this 50 hp motor. I am pretty certain it is a two stroke but wanted to confirm this. With this being a two stroke, the oil is mixed into the fuel reservoir correct?
What is the best oil to mix in it? I would like to go synthetic. Could I use Mobile One or does it need to be a marine oil?

Thanks in Advance.

Not sure what year they started putting VRO on the motors- but if theres a regular fuel pump on the side of the motor then it doesnt have it. In that case yes, you mix the oil in the gas tank at 50:1. DON"T use regular car motor oil. You have to use 2-stroke oil - I use the Evinrude outboard 2-stroke oil. they have regular and synthetic. I run regular on my 85 50Hp and havent had any issues. 2.6OZ per US gallon.

Thank you for the reply. So we can safely say this is a two stroke motor? The question is whether the oil is mixed in the tank or has it's own reservoir inside the motor? I do not see any external reservoir?

Yes it is a two stroke... and the evinrude/johnson VRO had an external oil tank that would be in the boat somewhere. It had a tube that conected just under the fuel line connection on the outside of the motor. Like I said they may have not even started making VRO until later.

from engine diagrams on this site, it shows no vro.
marine oil should say "TC-W3" some were on the container , several kinds of 2-stroke oil( air cooled or water cooled motors),

As above

A J50BELCNR is a 2 stroke and does not have VRO

Mix fuel and oil at 50:1 which is 2.56 oz oil per US gallon or near enough to 1 pint of oil to 6 gallons. 20cc per litre if you are fortunate enough to be where you buy gasoline by the litre.
Use a 2 stroke outboard engine TCW3 oil. ( TC= twocycle, W = water cooled. 3 = the latest spec)

There are synthetic oils avaialble
