1982 Evinrude Outboor Water Pump Problems

Hello everyone. I have been getting great info from the site and decided it was time to join. I have a reoccurring water pump failure. It's on a 1982 Evinrude Outboard. Every time I take it apart and put it back together it works for a while, then after sitting for several months won't work again until I take it apart and put it back together. Has anyone had this same problem? What am I doing wrong?

Also, are these motors supposed to continuously pump water out the telltale? Thanks in advance!
 
OK----So what motor do you have ?-----How are you testing the water pump ?----No such thing as having to repair it often like you are!----Yes water comes out the tell tale all the time when motor is running.

It's model # E50BELCNR

I tested it the other day by backing it into the river while still on the trailer. Water level was above the normal intake level. Last spring it was working like normal while driving on the water.
 
Testing is to be done with the waterpump fully submerged !-------Water level just covering the intake ports on the lower unit is not good enough.
 
Not sure what you are doing wrong then.-----These pumps are elegantly simple and little can go wrong with them.------Post some pictures of your pump parts.---Tell tale hose and fitting confimed clean and clear of dirt or weeds ?--When was impeller replaced ?---Are you sure the water tube seal is in place ?----Water tube not buckled , etc etc ?-----Salt water motor ?

Impeller was replaced right after I bought it, around 2016. Fresh water motor. I'll have to take it apart and inspect everything again and will post up pictures when I get it apart.
