"Hey guys, got an issue!!
I was having problems with motor jumping out of forward gear.. Bit the bullet and got a rebuilt lower unit. The last time we used the boat before replacing lower unit, it was only jumping out periodically... I knew we were going to replace it, so I wasn't too worried about it. Anyway, we were tubing and running around the lake at about 48-5200 rpm, all was fine.
I had been idling a lot, and I got an alarm. I immediately shut it down and we got out to swim for a while. A few times during that time, I turned the key on and still had the alarm. I assumed the temp sensors were working correctly. After 15 minutes or so, I turned the key on, no alarms, and we went on about our day.. The boat ran fine the rest of the day.
The next weekend, I got the new lower unit, replaced the water pump, and got it installed.
During diagnosing my original lower unit, I had messed with shift and throttle linkage pretty heavily, so I knew that resetting all of it would be necessary. I got everything reset, and went to the lake to do some tubing..
I had the idle too low, and it was hard to get it started and stay running.. I got the idle adjust up finally on the water, and went for a spin. The motor won't turn over about 2200 rpms now.
I got it back home, put it on the muffs. It ran okay, occasionally missing, and sputtering now and then. But it would start okay and run up in throttle. I wasn't dare going to wrap it up high out of the water...
I figured it was good. Well we went to the lake yesterday, it was very hard to start, smelled of gas, it would start and sit there "barely running" for a while. I finally got it to idle up and stay running and we left the dock.
Same thing, it won't go over about 2000-2500 rpms. It feels as if it's running "smooth" at 2-2500, it just won't go any faster. I checked the butterflies and all are opening up fully as they should. The timing is advancing like the book shows it should. (timing linkage is moving)
I pulled a couple of plugs and they've got quite a bit of black on them. Is it possible in my initial low idle settings, I fouled the plugs?
I'm gonna buy a new set of plugs tomorrow and give it a shot.. I know in my older days of dirtbikes and such, fouled plugs would give symptoms similar to these..
I just want someone to tell me that these are common symptoms to fouled plugs and not some other mysterious all of a sudden major problem..
Come on guys, whatcha think ??"

"I am interested in the answer

"I am interested in the answer to Daniel's question as well. I have a 1983 115 Hp that is doing the exact same thing (engine wise). Ran great then started exhibiting the same symtoms. I checked and readjusted/synced everything. New tank, fuel line, fresh gas...etc. I am thinking fuel pump maybe...I don't know. Help."

"Daniel you mentioned the key

"Daniel you mentioned the key work "Alarm" this needs to be checked out completely to answer the question WHY ?
Foul plugs will have an engine running ruff..
You need to do a compression check at this point, as for verification if the engine is overheating simply buy a digital/laser thermometer and verify they are cheap at harbour freight.
Use a flashlight and and check under your flywheel for any signs of your stator melting .."

"I have looked for stator resi

"I have looked for stator residue and found none..
That one alarm was the only time it's ever done it. It never did it the rest of that day or since. I'll take a temperature gun (laser type) home today and check it out.
Maybe the impeller was going out in the old lower unit, and running around that day tubing and idling a lot caused the overheat problem?
The new lower unit has a new impeller in it, so that may have cured the then-existent heat issue.
On an 82 Evinrude, the only trigger to the alarm is the temp sensors, right ?
I've read some online about the SLOW system which shuts down power in an overheat situation.
I'm telling ya, it didn't run 3 seconds with the alarm going before I shut it off...
And then a little later it started and ran fine the rest of that day."

"One thing I failed to mention

"One thing I failed to mention before.. When purchasing the lower unit, I did buy a used tack and wiring harness from the guy. Any chance the tach being bad could cause the condition I have ??"

Open your fuel pump and check

Open your fuel pump and check the screen it may be clog its very simple to open..

"fuel restriction,..wont set o

"fuel restriction,..wont set off any alarm,on that engine...nor,will a bad stator...overheating,is my guess........"

"Okay guys, here's more in

"Okay guys, here's more info.
Ran compression tonight. 117 to 121 between the 4 cylinders. No black goo surrounding stator or under flywheel. I didn't install new plugs yet. I plan to do that tomorrow."

"I am at somewhat of a loss ev

"I am at somewhat of a loss even with the manual as to what my baseline settings should be for the timing advance screw, and the idle adjustment on the carb linkages. Can anyone offer insight on those things, before I install the plugs and try to start it?"

My friend foul plugs will NEVE

My friend foul plugs will NEVER prevent you from going over 2500 RPM's base on this year it looks more like fuel restriction.

well that's good to know..

well that's good to know.. It's one problem I can rule out !!
Today comes many more diagnostics !!
I'll report later what I figure out.
Thanks for all of your help guys.

"If your engine has the SLOW feature see below for the troubleshooting steps..

Engine will not rev beyond 2500 RPM:
1. Use a temperature probe and verify that the engine is not overheating.
2. Disconnect the tan temperature wire from the pack and retest. If the engine now performs properly, replace the temperature switch.
3. Make sure the tan temperature switch wire is not located next to a spark plug wire."

"Andrew,

How can you tell if a motor has the SLOW feature? I have an 83' 115 hp and I cannot find any reference to it in the owner's manual or service manual. I will recheck. Also will the SLOW feature prevent the motor from reving above 2500 rpm with it only in gear or while also in nuetral while using the High RPM lever on the remote?"

SLOW will limit RPM in gear an

SLOW will limit RPM in gear and out of gear
Follow the instructions remove the tan wire from the pack and test..I am not sure if it does my manual shows it as a possibility

"Well guys thru much help from

"Well guys thru much help from folks on this board and private emails from some of you, I have determined that the power pack on the right bank is bad. Started out checking for spark. Had very very weak if at all, spark on the right side. But perfect on left. Swapped coils first. Then I had good spark on left using the "right side coils". Then I swapped power packs and the left side spark went away but had it on the right. So today I buy a power pack! Thanks again for your help."

"Nice follow up, Pls be sure t

"Nice follow up, Pls be sure to own the in line spark testers I mentioned in my previous post. Its worth its weight in gold because it can be connected up and have the engine running whilst u observe exactly if you have a good consistent spark or not."
