Hoping a mamber of the forums will be able to give me some advive and some guidance on my project.. I am just beginning the process of dropping tlhe lower unit to do a Water Pump Kit install. Im trying to determine the best way to go about getting the fastener off the linkage.....

The two repair manuals I have for my year engine leave alot to be desired from, one has a picture that points to the shift linkage at the L where the cottor pin connects, but upon reading online It seems that im looking for a fastener located a littler further down the linkage somewhere under the lower carb. ive located a fastener on the top collar where the shift linkage is connected. but im not 100% sure this is the proper fastener as i have also watched a few videos and the fasterer is located towears the trasmsom of this bolt visiable in the below picture.

question #1 - in the above picture is this the correct fastener to disconnect my shift linkage or is there another bolt im just not seeing.....this head of the bolt is right below the bottom of my carb..... should there be another fastener to the side of this bolt that i can reach with a socket and extension

question #2 - whats the trick to removing and reinstalling this bolt.... its located is such a spot where if i get it off i doubt ill get i back on.... looks like its easiest to remove the air silencer and carbs to access this......

any help or guidance would be greatly apprecated...

Follow the shift linkage up from the lower unit and see where it attaches. Remove that one bolt and that's it. Simple.

Thanks for the simple words of encouragement, your motivation is slightly more encouraging than the 2 repair manuals I have.

The attached photo of the bolt is about as far back down the shift linkage as I can humanly sèe.... that being said i might be able to remove the bolt, But come time for reassembly I know for sure I won't be able to get it back in...

The bolt you need to remove requires a 3/8" socket.----1/4" drive tools with long extension.-----This bolt is horizontal.----This job has been done many times.-----Not as hard as it may look to a novice.

Thanks Racerone, I'll make it out to the boat garage this afternoon, and do some more exploration. This bolt is indeed horizontal and makes removing and reinstalling impossible, dose makes sense there is another fastener that is accessible by a long extension + swival.. I have a sneaky feeling it's on the left side (Transom) of this bolt which is hidden by the wires that are run through this location..

I realize this is a very common procedure for an outboard, and thst I must be overlooking the process. I'm sure that once I locate the proper fastener to remove things will flow a little more smoothly.

Again I appreciate the advice and guidance to help this novice on the right path.

I'll post back with the process. As I progress.
