"Engine was properly pickled and sat for four years. Prior to storage engine ran excellent. Upon starting up it would idle but immediately bog down and stall when put in gear.
Compression test: 145, 140, 120
Work done thus far:
* pulled head, inspected, head gasket was fine, replaced with new
* tore down all three carbs, soaked, cleaned, rebuilt
* new plugs
* replaced fuel lines in engine (from pump to carbs)
* connected new primer bulb to jerry can with fresh gas
Solid blue spark on all three cylinders. Engine starts right up, coughs a bit at idle, revs fine without load, but bogs down and stalls when put in gear in the water.
Appears that the power pack and coils are ok (good blue spark). I believe I have ruled out fuel problems. When I advance the linkage it appears the timer base is moving (wouldn't the throttle bind if the timer base were stuck?).
I will check the timing next, though I do not understand how it would be off since the engine ran excellent prior to winterization and nothing has been adjusted since.
I mentioned in another post that an old service slip from the prior owner stated the #3 reed valve was worn. Perhaps it further deteriorated while sitting for four years and this is causing the problem? Any ideas? Thanks.
