1982 7.5 hp hard to start

I have a 1982 7.5 hp Johnson cannot idle it down to put it in gear with out it going dead. I have to turn throttle up past start to crank.

When did it last run properly and what happened ?---------------Do a compression test.-----Check for spark on both leads.
