" I have a 50 HP Johnson {cera 1982}that runs good on hight speed, but seems to back fire or spit at idle through the top carb. Could it be a timming or a carb problem???? What is the proper gap for the spark plugs (new have been insalled). "

You have described a engine that has a fouled top carburetor. I'd suggest that you clean and rebuild both.
