1982 15 hp Evinrude

I found I had one bad coil on my 82 15 hp Evinrude Not knowing if it was right or wrong I ordered one and installed that. All works great now but was wondering if I should have replaced both or will I be ok with just the one new and the old one? Thanks, Jim
 
It's usually a case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." However, the coil isn't a very expensive item and it wouldn't hurt to have both coils in the same condition. That'll give you the old coil that you know is okay to have in your on-board toolbox just in case.
 
I took it out again yesterday and it did it again. Was running great for about a half hour then started running on 1 cylinder. Took the cover off and pulled the lower plug wire and nothing happened so I jiggeled the wires and restarted it and wasn't any better but I was out to fish so I kept trolling and after a half hour it started running on both again. Ran the rest of the day-a couple of hours-just fine? Don't think it was the coil at all but something is still wrong. Could the powerpack act like that? Don't have any testing equiptment or the knowledge to use it if I did but would be willing to buy one if it was a good chance that would fix it. Power pack isn't that bad to buy and would probably order that other coil to. I realize it is hard to diagnose but with the knowledge here I am hoping it has happened to someone else.

I am having similar experience with 1974 15HP though can't get it to start, every now and then just a pop. one coil reads resistance on secondary winding, other one does not, yet both plugs have spark? any thoughts would be appreciated as I've been through the gapping of points, new plugs etc etc. there is spark but even with starter fluid not much and I have to work to even get a pop...thanks in advance
 
I had good spark at both but at times the lower plug had none-switched coils and seemed to be a bad coil so I put a new coil in and that helped for awhile but then back to only one cylinder running but that seemed to fix itself. I went ahead and ordered a new powerpack and another coil hoping that takes care of it. If you have spark and fuel it should run as long as you have good compression? Not so sure I would use starting fluid on a 2 stroke motor.

Have you checked the flywheel key and you should start your own thread for your motor.
