1982 115 Johnson Stator/Rectifier/charging problems????

I have a 1982 115hp johnson, model number J115TLCNB. Ive had charging problems with this motor for a long time now. I have replaced the rectifier 4 times which fixes the problem for a short time but eventully comes back. As of right now my motor is not charging the battery. My RPM guage will read correct until it reaches 5000 RPMs then the guage maxes out to 9000. Which is weird because normally when im having this issue the rpm guage doesnt work at all. Their is no voltage going to the battery but i know the stator is producing some power because if you unhook the battery the motor still runs. I have run a test on the rectifier and it checked good. So, can the charging part of the stator stop working but it still send power to the ignition? Is it burning up rectifiers or is their another problem? If someone could walk me through how to test the stator i would appreciate it! Any other input is welcomed also. Thanks, cody.

First of all disconnecting the battery while engine is running is a mistake.-----And yes the ignition system is seperate from the battery and motor will run without a battery in the circuit.
