1981 Johnson 9.9hp. Kill switch not working.

I got this outboard up and running with a bit of tinkering but the kill switch is not working.

I disconnected it and started the engine, then earthed the wire coming from the cdi and going to the kill switch but still does not cut the engine.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Earth the wire from the cdi unit directly to the block.----------What happpens then ?

It still runs.
I also have a Yamaha 6 or 8hp (not sure of hp or year, started another thread on this one) that the kill switch connects each live to the coils to kill the engine. Will this method work on the Johnson?
