1981 Johnson 60HP Spitting Out Fuel

Hello everyone. I have a 1981 Johnson 60Hp that is spitting out a large amount of fuel from the exhaust port. My last time out the motor was hard to get started, but once it did it began spitting out fuel. The motor stalled and again was hard to restart. Got it restarted and once I got running the problem went away and the motor ran fine as I trolled for several hours. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks.

Since fuel pumps do not come and go (if they're bad, they stay bad), and since the engine runs fine now, I'd suspect you had the engine tilted for a length of time... and guessing that you were using a portable fuel tank, the tank built up pressure and being tilted, the carburetor floats would be off level which allowed fuel to flow thru the carburetors.

Suspecting the gaskets were secure on the front of the carburetors and the face plate assembly, dropping the engine to a running position would let all that excessive fuel flow directly into the intake manifold and crankcase area.

Yeah... that would make for one hellava hard starting engine... but, once running and that gas got blown out, all would return to normal.

Makes sense. Only issue is that I always leave the engine tilted when not in use and I never had this problem before. Is there some remedy for this If indead that is the problem? Thanks.

If the fuel primer bulb gets hard... and does not collapse under pressure, the pump diaphragm is not leaking.

To my suggestion, you replied..."Makes sense. Only issue is that I always leave the engine tilted when not in use and I never had this problem before. Is there some remedy for this If indead that is the problem? Thanks"

If using a portable tank (you didn't say), crack the fill cap a bit to avoid any build up of pressure. If using a built in tank... disconnect the fuel line when not in use.

If for some reason, the fuel tank is higher than the engine's carburetors.... don't do that! :)
