1981 Johnson 60hp Reverse Problem

Good morning fellow boating fans. I need your advice. I was out yesterday in the boat and quickly discovered that reverse did not engage as smoothly as what I remember from last season. While I was in the process of backing off the trailer was when I first noticed a clattering noise while engaging reverse. The engine evindually went into reverse and backed out fine. By the end of the day I had no reverse. When I try to engage the reverse you hear a clatter and the engine RPM will speed-up but no prop movement. The forward motion of the engine works just fine, the idle seems to be smooth and the engine starts very easy. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Remove the shift cable at the engine.---Then shift it manually.-----In nuetral with it hooked to the cable is the shifter arm on the motor ( not the control box ) straight up and down ?

racerone thank you for the reply,
I think I found the problem and it does have to do with the linkage. There is a flat piece of metal that holds the two adjustment knobs in place and the single bolt that holds this piece was only finger tight, in fact the clamp(?) had rotated enough to allow the linkage to move. I adjusted the linkage to where I felt the correct place to be, tightened the bolt, hooked up the water hose to the engine and tested. All seems to work as I remember from last season. Back out to the lake this evening to try it out. I'll report back as to my success or lack of. Thanks again!!
