1981 johnson 60 wont turn over

Hi I have a 1981 Johnson 60 hp that runs quite well I have just installed a new starter moter because the old one I thought was faulty and would not turn the motor over .
I installed thye new one and had the same problem .Do these motors have a compression reducing divice in them because when I take the plugs out she turns over like a rippa,

No compression reducing device on it at all.-------Test your battery and the battery cables !

Hi I have tried putting direct power from my 4WD battery straight to the starter motor terminals it will through the starter up but it still doesnt have the power to turn it over.When I take the plugs out it turns over fine.

I always TEST stuff before replacing $$ parts.----Have you checked for a bad ground ?----Bad ground cable ??---It is either a defective starter or there is something wrong with your motor !-----have you checked for a binding lower unit ?
