1981 Johnson 35hp

I am trying to remove the water pump. My pump has the shifter shaft running through it and I assume I have to disconect it at the top close to the shifter lever. How do I do this without removing the power head? Appreciate any help.

Wrong--------------Remove the black plastic water intake screen to remove the shift rod connection.

Thank you, but the missing part of the question related to having to move the connecting nut up and reveal the plastic keeper. Had to go to JustAsk to find out. $28.00 !!!
