1981 johnson 35hp sea horse Hard to Pull start

"i picked up a 1981 35hp johns

"i picked up a 1981 35hp johnson. in great shape, everything moves fine with the plugs out, but once the plugs are in I can only pull the starter cord out about 8 inches and then the resistance stops me. any idea where the adjustment for this is at or if i'm missing something? i removed the pull cord assembly and it all moves freely. any help would be great. cheers

"Depends pehaps which sparks are put in! To my recollection it should have L77JC4, but if someone have put on an old cyl head You might need the 'shorter one' J4C. Same problem if someone has put in a 'y' plug with longer center electrode."
 
In other words the piston mayb

In other words the piston maybe hitting the spark plug causing it to stop. Try screwing the plugs out about half way and see if the engine turns over. If it does your plugs are to long for the engine. Replace with the correct number plug. Good luck.
