My engine has a primer system

My engine has a primer system in place of a choke. Is this better than a choke ? How does this function. I don't think mine works.

Should it squirt gas when the ign switch is pushed in or does the engine also have to be cranking at the same time to work the fuel pump to make it squirt?

just leave it on run and treat it like a choke.

It's black but I think I have that problem solved. It seems to work ok now that I have learned how it functioned.Thanks for everyones help. I do have a intermitant ign prob also (See new post)
