1981 Evinrude 9.9 outboard lower end

I have a 1981 Evinrude 9.9 prop outboard I just rebuilt for a friend of mine. I usually don't have any troubles rebuilding these but the main
drive shaft will not turn the lower end unit no matter what I do. There is a spring with two ball bearings that go between the drive shaft/drive shaft pinion and the shifter clutch dog. Is there a trick to put this into place or am I installing it wrong? I put it in and there was spring in the driveshaft but then I lost it and both spring and ballbearings are no longer there. Am I installing these wrong? I there some kind of trick to this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Nothing to it.-------------The spring goes through the prop shaft with a ball on either end.-------These are there to keep the clutch dog in for a " positive neutral " for lack of a better description.--------Forces the operator to snap the motor into gear and causes less damage to gears and clutch dog.---------------Use grease to hold the balls in place and the second ball is pushed with a screw driver as propshaft is pushed in.------------Find the ballls and the spring before you do anything else !!!

Ok. I've done that but then why won't the driveshaft engage? I thought I installed them properly which I have. The main shaft going into the power head will not engage. The model is an E10RCID. Running through forward neutral and reverse seems fine but once the lower end goes back on the water indicator will not pump and the prop shaft will not turn. Any reason for this? The top of the drive shaft isn't damaged at all. I'm at a loss trying to figure it out. There was a little play in the driveshaft so I pulled it up as much as I could before re-installing the lower end but still nothing.

By the way, I retread my original post and It sounds like I said I put the bearings and spring between the shaft and the clutch. I put it on the prop shaft through the hole where the clutch rides. But I still don't know why the lower end will not engage.

Is the shaft the proper length ? any pictures ? any measurement done ?-------Any other history as to what led to this work being done ?

The main shaft is the same one that was in it originally. The reason I took the lower end apart was because they hit a rock and it threw the clutch from forward into reverse gear and shattered the clutch.
