Have a pretty low hr motor that jsst gave up the ghost going into reverse.
Lever moves freely into reverse like it was working correctly
forwad and neutral are good as well no issues

ther is no grinding or ratcheting heard or felt if in revese running or stopped if i turn propeller by hand

cant see anywhere where linkage travels near p0wer head inside cowel
where do i ttr looking fr an issue.

Oil in lower unit looks god, clean and no cuttings

thanks

Can you do a video clip? This sounds strange. At least the shift arm must have changed from normal positions?

It would puzzle me ... and its all exactly the same as my '84 6hp

Two places to look I guess the cam at the bottom of the shift rod deep inside the gear case and the gear and pinion at the top of the shift rod under a cover plate at the top of the exhaust housing only accessible after removing the power head.

The parts diagrams on this site show where the bits and pieces are located.

Id start by removing the gear case ....... the shift rod comes with it...... and asses the operation of the shift mechanism in the gear case without dismantling it. (While its off is a good time to replace the pump impeller and the driveshaft and shift rod seals so not effort wasted)

If that appears to operate correctly I'd turn my attention to the gear and pinion, starting by taking off the power head from the exhaust housing. If it doesn't then I reckon its a total gear case disassembly to find the cause.

( While the power head is off is a good time to replace that pesky grommet at the top of the water tube. I got fed up with it and modified things there with O rings and nylon spacers)

its the original lower unit, never been off ever before. Ive had 8 years

i know original owne,r bet doesn't have 40 hrs on motor

last year it acted up a few times going in revese , but did get there and stayed there

this year pu on boat and nothing. like I said lever moves just like normal going to reverse. in position wher it should be. no grinding, nothng

going to use for rest of summer then pull apart. Hop its in lower unit so i dont have to pull powerhead

thanks

There is not much in there that can cause you to lose reverse.-----I can not see how you could lose reverse on a 40 hr motor.-----But take the unit off and shift it and see if it is linkage or lower unit as already stated.

Who changed the water pump impeller......and when? Someone of extensive marine repair experience? This is ultimate design. Trouble free, simple, reliable.
