1981 4hp evinrude water pump

I have a 1981 2 cylinder Evinrude. I bought it new in 1982. I have only used it in fresh water. I keep it in my house cellar where it is never cold. The engine runs great. The engine is now 29 years old and I have never replaced the water pump impeller. As I said it runs great. How can I tell if it needs a water pump? You would think it would have failed by now.

Consider yourself very lucky !------replace it now.--------My bet is the rubber will be cracked and " ready to fail "

Can you tell me where the water that cools the engine exits the engine?

It spits out with the exhaust relief------Most goes out underwater and you can not see it.--------------If it is the original impeller then you are living on borrowed time.----------------If the pump fails tomorrow you will essentially have a scrap motor.-------------There is no warning sytem ( shut off ) on it and the only thing you will say is " why is the motor slowing down " and it will be too late.
