"Just joined the board looks like lots of very knowlegable people here maybe someone can help me, Can the power tilt and trim (internal unit)be removed while the motor is still on the boat?"
 
"Yes it can. On the early mode

"Yes it can. On the early models, it was necessary to have the engine raised to its extreme and safely blocked in that position, then remove and slide to the left the port transom bracket. This was necessary as in those early models the electric motor and reservoir would not clear either transom bracket.

At some point in time, the transom brackets were modified so that the PTT assembly would tilt back and come out without removing that bracket. I've lost track of the exact year.

Hopefully you have the later modified trtansom brackets."

"Thank you Joe looking at it it seems it should slip out past the brackets, TT motor runs but wont lift the motor have filled the reservoir had a slight leak at the fill plug put new o-ring on ran fine 2 days ago."

"Mike... Before going to a vast amount of work, do this.

Apply 7 t0 12 pounds of pressurized air to the reservoir. This will force the PTT fluid under the oil pump should a air lock exist in that area which is a common problem.

Let me know if this cures your problem."
 
Well Joe finally got a chance

Well Joe finally got a chance to look at the T & T and it is leaking fluid around the top cap on the center cylinder and it will not lift the motor from the down position looks like I will have to rebuild.
 
That leak wouldn't prevent

That leak wouldn't prevent the lifting action of the PTT. Did you apply the air pressure as mentioned?

Yes I did apply the air pressure and added more fluid if I help lift the motor while the switch is active motor goes up fairly easy but will not lift on its own. Any other ideas on the cause?

"leaking 'o' rings,bad man rel valve,..leaking ck valves..there is a special tool to ck the 4-5 or so ck valves....but,to use 1 x every 8 yrs,is not good .if u contact a dealer or reputable shop in your area,maybe they would test them for you..THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE....just FYI"

During the above, is the PTT electric motor operating at the normal speed OR is it running slow, straining, laboring against the weight of the engine?"
 
1979 85 hp johnson motor til

1979 85 hp johnson motor tilts up will not come down..trim rods wont move either..fluid level is ok.electric ok. pump motor runs ok. neighbor is a hydraulic pump pro and would get at it but are there some things we could do before removal? thanks

"Yes , Locate the emergency relef valve on the Starboard side using a flat head screwdriver you can manually lower it down releasing this screw. It's acutally a manual relef valve design for this."
