1981 115hp Merc no forward or reverse gears.

You are learning , but very slowly !--------------You put the new impeller on the shaft .-----Then lower / push the pump housing onto the impeller, while turning the driveshaft in the normal direction of engine rotation.----The absolute easiest and best way to install impellers on a motor like yours.--------------It takes some effort to move the clutch dog as it is a very strong spring in there.-----------------The pin was in the end of the PROPSHAFT I assume.

racerone, you are correct...very slowly. Gotta ? What gear should the hand shifter be in when putting the lower unit back on and what gear for the shift shaft, all the way clockwise, in the middle or all the counterclockwise? This is where I may have messed up. Currently lower unit is in forward gear and won't shift by hand shifter.

You put the hand control in the same position as the lower unit !!--------------So if lower unit is in nuetral , then shift lever must be in nuetral.----------------The lower unit will easily jump into forward ( strong spring remember )-----------------So if you have it in forward then put the control box in forward.---------Always have an assistant check shifting before installing the nuts and bolts.-------------Forget about this all the way clockwise or all the way counterclockwise , that is the wrong approach !!!

Here's the deal (and that LU is probably okay): Gently clamp some Vise Grips to the shift shaft and rotate it CCW until it offers resistance. Then GENTLY rotate it a bit more CCW while a helper rotates the prop shaft. It will go into neutral then. Go a bit further and you'll be in reverse, but go too far and you'll go past the cam and be in forward again. Got it?

fastjeff and racerone,
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! My lower unit works! That was the problem all the time. I have forward, reverse and neutral. I am a happy man. Not knowing if the lower unit was OK or not, I didn't change out the impeller. So, when I drop the lower unit again for waterpump change, what gear should it be in? I hate to take it apart again but this motor has been sitting for several years and don't know how long it will last.

You are making a big mistake running that motor with an old / unknown impeller.-----------------No warning system for overheat !!!

I did run it but only for about 45 seconds with water muffs low rpms. I am replacing the impeller today and will put back together with new lower unit oil too. Try it out tomorrow.
Thanks for all of your HELP!!
Bassky
