1980 mercury 80 hp trigger replacement

I recently purchased a 1980 mercury outboard. The PO stated that he just had it running, but I no longer believe this.

Long story short, I think I've narrowed down the problem to the trigger and/or stator. I dug in, removed the flywheel and the stator, and attempted to get to the trigger plate, but I'm stuck with removing the attachment on the flywheel to remove the trigger plate.

Take a look at the attached picture. How do I remove the red plate above the trigger plate? I applied enough force with a flywheel puller to pull anything, but I can't get it to move. Even soaking it with pb blaster hasn't helped.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

They can really stick! I had to dangle a Merc from a chain fall and heat it while retightening the puller. Jumped several feet in the air when it broke loose.

IF you could get the motor to run--even a little bit--and left the flywheel nuts loose, it might help.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was afraid something was going to break with the amount of torque we were applying. We made another attempt and weren't going to back down... again. We actually bent the puller bolt, but then we heard the pop and finally got that sucker to break free.

Thanks again!
