"My 1980 Merc V6 runs very well; except that after switching from neutral to reverse, and pulling the control all the way back, the engine runs runs OK for about 5 seconds and then it stalls. It feels like it just needs more RPM. It starts right up again in neutral and the whole process starts over again, stalling in reverse. QUESTION: Can I solve this by increasing the max RPM in reverse by adjusting an RPM STOP screw somewhere?"

"Mine goes back into forward when I push the button and pull back hard or slow on reverse believe it or not. I really wish someone would explain this to me, so I can repair it.

"Ron-you can increase your idl

"Ron-you can increase your idle speed a bit to see if that helps. Do not mess with the timing/spark advance stops or max rpm stop, once set at the factory they should be good.

Ryan- on the main merc page, top left, start new thread, but the rigging is off for some reason, maybe someone had the lower unit off and the shift shaft is off one tooth."
