1980 90hp mercury

I have a 1980 mercury 90hp it only has 1 ignition coil the slator insulation wires are corroded and I taped them back up When I turn the key over my ignition coil don't send a spark to the distributer cap. But if I just barley tick the key it will spark sometimes I can try it and after a while of barley ticking the key over it will putt acouple times and start up and run. After I turn it off it will start right back up again but sometimes if I fish for a little while it won't start again and I have to keep ticking the key over until it does or get towed in sometimes it won't start at all nor send spark to the coil I'm thinking it's the switch box but I would like input b4 I waste money on something that could be wires if u know what it could be or any help at all plz reply or call me 2702210362 thanks guys

You are sure this motor is a 1980 ?----Pictures or a serial # required here.----I do not believe the 1980 model had only one coil.

I'll get the serial number in the morning and take a picture to post also but it has 1switch bow on the front case of the motor 1 ignition coil and a d cap it has 6 cylinders
