1980 70hp 3cyl Johnson outboard/Gaskets

When installing the Head gasket and water jacket gasket,should these be put on without any glues,ect,or as they are? That is, just clean off the old and replace the new.
 
It depends....... If the gaskets are the type that have a glossy look to them, I believe you'll find print on them that states Do Not Use Sealer.

If not the glossy type gaskets, I'd suggest that you use sealer on the water jacket gasket but just plain oil on the head gasket.
 
Any kind of oil is fine.

Gasket sealer would be the type in a can that has a brush attached to its screw off cap...... it is called simply Gasket Sealer and is available at any automotive parts type store.
 
Again thanks Joe for the info. I will use gear oil that I have for the foot on my head gasket. If the head gasket or water jacket gasket isn't the problem,I'll be back,all the way from Wabush,NFLD. lol
 
After removing the head,I see that the heads of the 3 pistons are totally black as if painted with a paint brush,only with a very small portion still visible on each head.Do
these pistons have to be changed or is there a way to remove the carbon on the heads.Also a gasket sealer can't be found for the water jacket gasket,would a gasket adhesive work?
 
BRP sales gasket sealer, you can remove the carbon from the top of the pistons, and I would tell you to run seafoam in your gas all the time. I would also do a decarbon with seafoam. it tells you how on the can.
