1980 7.5 Johnson lower unit problem.

I am removing lower unit on this motor to fix water pump. As unit is lowered shift rod and drive shaft are supposed to come down with lower unit. As I lower part way, the drive shaft stays attached to power head. Instructions warn about drive shaft coming out of lower unit - if it does have to open lower gear unit to replace shaft on pinon gear. Any ideas on how to get drive shaft out of powerhead?
