1980 470 Shutters - Flapper

Hello again. My exhaust pipe did not have a flapper when I assembled it. Its a 1980 Mercruiser pipe for a 470. There was a clip on one side and then a dimple on the other. Can someone tell me what shutter I should order? There seem to be many kinds. And is it absolutely necessary? I am shutterless in Seattle. http://www.mercstuff.com/watershutters.htm

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

mmmmmm... dont think so. Is there a sierra part number for this? I have been to the shops and bought three different ones, and no one seems to know. 470 XPERTS?

with the removal of the exhaust elbow and the bellows the water shutter is in the exhaust tube ..

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

Thanks cat... Where it was is more like it. Thats why I cannot get an answer on the PN. Nothing to show them. There is a hairpin style clip on one side of about a 3" tube.

I got my 470 in 1987 . in 1990 I had to replace the elbow and that was when I saw all this ...I have the OEM Manual and thats where they show its located ...on installing you must wait 24hrs for the sealant to cure on the installation of this water shutter before engine operation ...

I think the part number is 60930 ...see if thats it ..

out on water last weekend still going good ...

the sealant goes behind the two water shutter support brackets that are fastened to the top of the exhaust water tube ..

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

perhaps someone has a good picture of this . the OEM manual is not very good ...yes two support brackets 4 fasteners ...thoughly clean tube on installing apply sealant behind the support brackets then torque fasteners ...

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

Well I went ahead and bought sierra replacement part for 60930- and there are no grommets available accdg to the two sources (fisheries supply seattle) I use. and so I GUESS I just jam the metal pins in there? My other friend did that on his 4.3 but CAT sounds like he knows what he's doing. IN ANY CASE. Ill photograph the surgery for future users.

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

Well here are a few photos proving there is no way I can fit this. Can someone tell me which style flapper goes in?

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

How low is your riser in relation to the water ? In other words the only reason they have shutters flappers is when you say beach a boat the waves do not ride up your drive into the riser / elbow and into the motor.

Or when you come to a stop and you do not allow the motor to idle for a few minutes, and the wave you created with your boat hits you in the rear.

My boat is a 86' and i do not have flappers there is no where for them in my system.

Volvo now does not install them and has issued a bulliten to everyone with a Volvo to remove them.

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

It's only about 4" from water level to riser. And they say the 470 needs them or your #4 is toast. The clips in there obviously mean something goes in there but the flapper is 3 " and the only place I can see it going -between two holes about 3 in down, is only 2" wide

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

thanks chief - but I have a completely different downpipe and there is no way the part in the schematic, which is the same as in my photo, fits in the top of my 3.5 inch tube. It simply falls down into where my photo shows. Also, It goes from round at the top to oval about 4' down and there are these 3" long pen clips on either side. Nothing like the diagram

the manual states the shutter sets on the top of the two support brakets mounted on each side of the top of the tube. the pivot shaft should set on top of these brakets not set into the bottom of the exhaust tube ..then the sealant is applied to the area between the support brackets mounting fasteners and the inside of the exhaust tube.

so what you say is the flapper pivot stud is too short to bridge the support brakets ?

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

yes cat
The flapper top (axis) is at least 1/4 " too short for those to mount. The clips, down in, are where it mounts. What is the manual you are reading it in for? A 470? I showed it to our local Mercruiser service place here in Seattle and they had absolutely no clue. And agreed it goes down in the clips. I do not have the downpipe in the link above nor do I have a downpipe that could have a top mount.

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

Hey 20miler, try this site! (breezeworks 470 talk) It is a site dedicated to the 470 owner specifically (maybe you are already aware of this but if not you should definitely post there and there are a few guys on the site that will really try hard to lead you in the right direction. I was also curious as to why you have the later exaust pipe on a 1980 when I thought that you should have the older style pre Alpha exaust. I'm thinking that something may have been changed. (maybe someone replaced the pre alpha with an alpha one r/mr exaust pipe. jmho
best of luck, Tom

Re: 470 Shutters - Flapper

Tom do you mean I do not have a prealpha pipe? This could be useful info. You recognize it as a later pipe?
