"What's up guys,
I'm having problems with my 470 merc. Motor will not start-up cold, unless i pump it about 4 times, then i have to hold the throttle open about 1/4 to keep it running. Once it's warm, it runs somewhat smooth. If i let it run for about 15 minutes, the motor just quits. This happened also on the water. Got up on plane and the boat just quit like i shut the key off. Things i did to it so far: complete tune-up/fuelpump/coil/rebuilt the carb./keyswitch. Someone said to check the vent on the fuel tank, and also the lines coming off the tank. Can you think of anything else to check? I'm pulling my hair out with this thing. HELP PLEASE!!"

"try running off a portable tank first.concerning the fuel pump, do you have a clear line from the pump to the carb. ? if not and the port is plugged the fuel pump wont work."

Is the carb choke out of adjus

Is the carb choke out of adjustment or the choke is worn out--weak spring or blocked exhaust heat passage if it's a stovepipe choke? Check for a vacuum leak at the carb base and around the intake manifold.

Check the anti-siphon valve in the fuel tank for the fuel starting problem. Look for a loose ground wire in the ingition or a loose 12 VDC connection in the points or a defective condenser that gets hot and shorts out.

The vent line issue is when there is a low spot in the vent line that gets fuel in it and then the pump can't pull fuel out of the tank.

"Thanks for the info guys. Lif

"Thanks for the info guys. Lifted up floor this weekend, and found a mess. Factory tank for starters(1980) Lines were all shot, anti-syphon valve was clogged with crap, and fuel smelled alittle funky. Decided to pull 85 gallon tank, and get a 40 gallon. Gonna replace all lines and look at carb. again. Also i read that someone makes a different distributor to upgrade from the old points set-up. Do you guys know where i can find this distributor? Again thanks for all the info."

You don't need to change the dist. To convert the points to electronic just cliclk above on "engine parts" and then click on ignition conversion.

"I've got a 1981 Mercruiser 470. Runs like gangbusters for a couple of hours, then when you have to shift into neutral to pick up a skier or approach the dock, the thing dies when you shift it into gear. Starts right back up, but dies again when you shift. Any ideas?"
