Hello everyone I am new to the forum and have a questions. I recently received a 1980 15 hp evinrude and there was an issue with the choke know. Every time you would pull it out it would want to slide back in and doesn’t want to stay out. The past owner used a clothes pin to hold it out when starting it then removed it when running and it slides back in. Does anyone know how to help the issue. I haven’t done much investigating due to not wanting to mess things up. Is there a tension screw or something that could be tightened to fix the issue. And if anyone else has any other tips or info about the motor please feel free to share and help out. Thank you.

Facts for you-----Folks often put the knob in upside down and it does not work properly.----There is an expensive shiny bracket / detent / guide on top of the carburetor that may be missing.

See if you can take the choke switch out and flip it around. trust me it will make a difference.

if not then check any springs to make sure they are not too tight. If they are too tight then they will restrict the movement of the switch and it will not stay in the required position.

also on the carb there will be a choke flap that has a mechanical movement. check all of this to see if there is full movement.

The choke detent is that stainless bracket / guide assembly above the carburetor.----It is held in place by the 2 screws that hold the air box !

Lakedelavan:
Remove the engine hood.
Pull the slow speed needle adjustment knob after noting its position to replace it the same way.
Remove the 4 (or 5) screws holding the air box cap.
Remove the 2 screws holding the base of the air box on top of carburetor.
Remove air box by tilting it forward and lifting it up over the cowling front edge.
Look at the top of the carburetor now exposed.
Do you see an "L" shaped flat stainless steel bracket holding and guiding the choke knob?
If you do, pull the choke knob out and replace it upside down from the position it was in when you pulled it out and check and see if your problem is fixed after replacing the 2 screws holding the guide/bracket.
If you don't, PM me your address and I'll be glad to send you one, courtesy of JD.

Okay so I looked at it and there is the detent and it was not upside but the choke knob was really oily so I cleaned it off and the 2 screws that held the detent in place we a little loose I I tightened it down and it seems to be holding just fine now. I had another question but on the tilt piece there is a plastic cover that goes over the bolt that holds it in place. With the plastic cover on it won’t lock in and it can freely tilt up and down but with the cover off and just the bare bolt it securely locks into place. Would it be an issue of that covers off. It seems to just be protecting the bolt.
