"I have a 1980 15hp. Johnson engine and it keeps popping out of gear when going forward. From everything I have read I think it is the clutch dog. I have a couple of questions about the clutch dog. I'm fairly good a doing engine work. I have never changed out a clutch dog before, is it a very difficult to change and do I need any specialty tools to get the job done? Is there anybody that sells them from this site or has a part number? Thanks in advanced!

"you will have to drop the lower unit and pull the prop hub assy.cluth dogs are part of the gear.it"s not that bad of a job but you will need some other things ,some seals new oil etc.
and a puller.
are you sure its not out of adjustment,close but not close enough."

"No, I'm not sure that it's out of adjustment. Is adjusting it not to hard? How can you tell that the adjustment is correct and the clutch dogs are engaging correctly?
