1980 115 hp prop slips

I have a early '80s vintage 115 hp Mercury. The head is running good, but I have very little power when the engine is engage in forward. With the engine off, I can engage in reverse, no slip either way. However, when I engage forward, the prop slips in teh forward direction. Any ideas what could cause this.

Re: 115 hp prop slips

That is normal. It has a dog clutch in it that allows you to ratchet it on way, but it should not move the other. In reverse, it shouldn't move at all. The only real way to tell of the prop is slipping, is to mark the prop, and the hub with a grease pencil and put it in the lake and try it, if the marks are not aligned afterwards, it is time to get the prop rehubbed. If the prop isn't slipping, you might need to rebuild the carbs. Also do a compression check. I have seen motors with low compression run great until you put a load on them, the same with the carbs.

Ok. I just had a recent problem with the prop nut not being torqued properly and I was getting excessive vibration. I don't have the vibration issue, just very little forward propulsion.

Yes, really sounds like the rubber on the prop hub is shot and it's "slipping" - the grease pencil trick noted above will confirm.

If so, for about 35 bucks or so a local prop shop can have you fixed up in no time...
