1979 mercury 70 HP starter problem

I am having starter drive problems with my 70 HP 3 cylinder outboard All it does is spin when I turn the key. The bendix drive is not kicking out. It worked fine last time I used the boat aprox 9 moths ago. I have owned this boat for 12 years w/o this problem ever happening. How do you remove the starter on that engine? Is the starter serviceable? Do they ever get gummy or have major corrosion? This boat is well taken care of & it has never seen salty water. any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Classic sign of a weak battery, I would charge the battery first. -------With that amount of " no use time " you might want to take the starter apart and inspect / replace the brushes, one may be stuck.

I fully charged the battery today before I went to try to start it. But I will check the battery voltage & connections. If the brushes are stuck how does the starter come off the motor? Also can you take off the lock nut on the end of the starter drive shaft & slide out the drive to get at the brushes in the starter once I do figure out how to remove it? I got to get this fixed otherwise I will have some very unhappy kids that won't be going to the lake this weekend. Thanks for all of your help.

Oh God! I hope you didn't hook the battery cables up backwards. That'll do it, along with destroying your spark box.
