"First of all, this is the first venture that I have made into any type of boating. Last summer I purchased cheaply, an old 16' v bottom boat without a motor. I was recently given an old mercury 402 ( serial number 5043676 off the back of the mounting bracket). I've replaced most of the wiring (which was very corroded) on the motor. I've checked the compression on both cylinders and one reads 140 and the other 135.
I tried to start the motor which I had placed on a stand, with a muff, and without too much of a problem, I got it to start and run briefly 30-45 sec(had to disable the Kill switch wire and jump the choke).
What would anyone suggest I do next to make sure the engine is worth saving and doing other repairs to, if needed?
Thanks for any input.
Gary"
