1979 Mercury 20 hp shift shaft question

This Mercury has a lower unit shift shaft that was quite gnarled so it would not shift correctly and

I've now replaced it,however the female end it joined to in the swivel bracket was also worn and damaged.

When replacing the shift control shaft in the swivel bracket, do you remove the power head and pull it up

through the top or is it possible to turn the shaft from the bottom thereby removing the gear sector, (I

assume this is threaded) and remove the shift shaft through the bottom? I assume it is threaded am I correct

on that? What's the best way to take this out?

As I recall, the swivel clamp assembly has to come off to replace that female shifter coupling. If so, the powered has to come off as well. Big job.

(Sorry: it's been a while!)
