1979 johnson 70 low compressi

Winner couger

New member
Hi everyone new to the forum and boating I
I just recently bought a 73 winner couger that I'm in the process of replacing the transom which has been going well almost done with it. It has a 1979 70johnson outboard the engine runs and has 120psi compression on the top 2 cly but the bottom is only at 70 I want to rebuild it over the winter but don't no where to start with parts. I'm very mechanically inclined and have rebuilt many diseal engines but I'm new to the 2stroke outboard world just need some direction thanks in advance

Yep, the above would be my starting point.
Thank you for replying yea I didn't check that yet is that fairly common on these I ordered a service manual just waiting for it to come in I hope thats all it is it only has 200hours on it and is super clean only ever in fresh water every boat shop in my area says they won't even touch it the pre 81s are not worth fixing just get a newer engine but I have nothing in it so why by someone else's problem if it does need rebuilt where should I buy a lot thanks

When you get around to it, be sure to let us know what you find... specifically, in detail.... condition of cylinder walls, pistons, sealing surfaces of the head and block, etc... whatever you come across. Pics would be a bonus.

I wanted to thank everyone again pulled the head and found the headgaskit blown at the bottom of number 3 at the fire ring which is a huge relief the clynders look almost new I have pics but can't figure out how to post them off my droid use to iPhones if someone can help me I will post them
