"Hi,

I have a 55EL79 Johnso

"Hi,

I have a 55EL79 Johnson outboard. It is a bitch to get started and it floods very easily.

Once started it runs fine, idles indefinitely, throttles up fine, and is fine under load, bringing my 14ft Dory up to a stable plane with 4 people in no problem.

I have used a timing light to prove i'm getting a good spark on both plugs when its not firing up. Its got new coils, a new battery, a new power pack, and new sparks so i'm confident its not an ignition issue.

When its not firing on start up and I check the plugs they are bone dry. So I put them back and choke it a bit and then it floods. Taking the sparks out, drying them off, letting the open sockets breath for a bit, and then putting them back in normally gets it going. Once up and running its fine.

I noticed that the idle screw is right out to its maximum. I thought this might be the reason it struggles to start and floods eaisly so I wound it back with the engine running and it stalled. It seems to only start and idle with the screw out to max.

Anyone got any ideas why the engine won't idle at a lower rev range or if this is even a problem? And any ideas why it floods so easily or is such a bitch to get started?

I've done a compression test which gave me readings of 40psi on both cylinders, but i'm new to compression tests and didn't test with the sparks out or fuel disconnected or throttle open. Would this be why the reading is so low? I'm assuming the engine woudln't run so well once started if the compression where as low as 40psi?"
