1979 johnson 115hp outboard will not stay running

i have a 115hp 1979 outboard s/n e01493 model 115983e select shift will only run when the ignition switch is held in the start position as soon as the ignition switch is let go to the run position the engine quits. while the ignition switch is held in the start position i have full control when the engine starts.
primitive pete owned this engine before me and the wiring was a disaster spent hours tracing wires. the power pack was bad and replaced by me about 7 months ago the engine ran just fine, now 7 months later this problem appeared. the engine was not run during this time. any help would be greatly appreciated
 
You should have a 6 terminal ignition switch.

A single Black/Yellow wire (Kill Circuit) should be attached to a raised "M" terminal.
Another regular "M" terminal should have a single black wire leading to ground.
Get back to me with whatever you found.
 
i traced out the M connection on the ignition switch it goes ground point connected to the battery. i replaced this rusty ground point but still no luck, however i did find what i think is wrong on the engine connector block. i do not want to make any changes until i confirm this. see figures 2,3 and 4. everything looks good until i get to terminal 7 from there it is a mess.



terminal 7 has only one wire from the ignition safety assembly which is blue with a black trace. the colors coming out of the ignition safety circuit are terminal 9 has purple with yellow trace terminal 2 yellow with white trace, terminal 3 has a yellow with a blue trace, terminal 7 has a blue wire with a black trace. the problem is my color wiring shows two purple wires coming from the ignition safety circuit, this a little confusing. which color is right for terminal 7? also i assume that the purple wire from the pulse pack also connects here.
the wiring diagram i have is figure 3
terminal 8 has no connection i assume one of the wires from the ignition switch goes there

terminal 9 has a connection from the ignition safety circuit purple with yellow trace connected is this the correct color wire?
 
The motor is NOT a 79 model.----Therefor you may have the wrong key switch !!----You may want to get rid of the safety circuit as well.
 
how do i get rid of the safety switch? just disconnect it? model number of the engine is 115983E serial number E01493. any idea of the year?
 
have not yet ordered any parts. i copied the year wrong sorry my fault. i checked the ignition switch shown in my post it checks out OK but the wiring diagram i have does not show the kill switch M terminal. if i disconnect the M terminal from the engine will this bypass the kill switch? i am also concerned with the wiring at the terminal strip on the engine. the colors on the ignition safety circuit do not match the wiring diagram i have. (see my post for photo)
