1979 evinrude locks up

I have a 1979 evinrude 25952r 25 hp. Long shaft. I was in Canada last week and it ran fine until the last day, I was about 1/2 throttle and it just started losing power so I shut it down. Tried to restart and it won't spin all the way around.

Spinning it by the flywheel it will go about 9o% around. I checked tonight and it did not break a rod or crank. I took the lower unit off and still the same thing.

Im an old jeeps guy and don't know much about outboards at all.

anyone got any idea what I'm looking at?

Pull the cyl head off and see what you find.

This motor is done, there's a hole in the block where the rod went through it.

I picked up a 1996 Johnson 30 to replace this engine. The steering bracket on the new motor is broken which is why I got a good deal on it. On close inspection, they look the same off my 79 and my 96. I'm going to switch them but what a chore.
