What happen was me and my wife and son where out fishing where mkving across the lake get out of the wind. When went to stop it didnt want to move back to neutral, i got it back in neutral after trying for a few. Went to go back in forward and it wasnt engageing, didnt hear no clicking ir anything. It went into reverse but really stiff. When got home i tryed to shift by hand and it wouldnt move the shift linkage at all. Took lower unit out and apart to see if the linkage in bottom end is broke and cant get it out.

I cant seen to get the pinon gear out, or the shift linkage in the lower unit. Dtive shaft is out, and so is upper linkage. Tryed to pull the prop shaft out and cant get it to move. Cant find any fourm or video on this motor. It is the full mechanical one, no electronic shift or hydro.

Turn the unit upside down, push the shifter dog into forward gear. That should allow you to remove the pinion gear.

The propshaft is attached to the shift mechanism at the forward end. The shift rod and pinion gear need to be removed before the propshaft assembly can be removed.

So are you sure the motor is a 79 model ?----------Is the gearcase original to the motor ??-----Model # of this motor required now !-----Proof that model # should be posted As your motor or lower unit are not 1979 !!!!

Engine Model Number?

The 1979 85hp Evinrude/Johnson does not have an oil pump... it simply has a shift mechanism housing. There is no ball bearing in the shifter dog.

The lower unit you speak of with the 3 ball bearings in the shift plunger... and a oil pump pertain to the 1974 to 1977 models.

When pulled the clutch dog off had 3 balls in it with spring and idk thy but cant put it back together

Install 2 balls in the side holes of that plunger's shaft, hold them there with your fingers, drop the 3rd ball down it's tube, put the spring in the tube, install that carefully in the propshaft.

Still dosent explaun how to put the pin threw everthing without the balls falling out or spring trying to go in the shift linkage

Why did you take this apart ?--------What is the model # of your motor ?----------Was the motor running when you did the diagnosis at home ?

Ill look at the model number when i vet off, motor runs, i adjusted the shifter cable a few times. Also tryed by hand pulled apart cause event after i got the prop shaft out i coukdnt move the dog clutch.

(So what year is this motor then?)

I'll be able to tell you just as soon as you get the Model Number of the engine to us.

There would be a plate on the port transom bracket with the Model & Serial number on it... possibly also a quarter sized aluminum core plug... looks like a small auto freeze out plug... on the block somewhere with those numbers on it.
