1979 evinrude 55 HP reverse is forward

Hello all,

I am working on a boat for a friend. Spent many hours over the winter repairing this and that. Went to start it this weekend and the following happened. When the remote was put in reverse the prop turned CW which is forward (does have a R/H prop) and the engine went to full throttle. When the remote was put in forward, the prop turned CCW and at a very low RPM. I took the linkage apart at both the engine and the remote and everythin appears hooked up correctly, i.e. the forward/reverse cable goes to the forward/reverse lever on both the engine and remote and the throttle cable appears to be on the correct remote lever and engine connection as well. Everything is backwards. Any thoughts?
 
Wrong lower unit.-------------Earlier versions used a different motion to shift.----------Down motion of shift rod produced forward.----On later motors an up motion of shift rod got forward.--------------You will have to find and install earlier linkages in order for it to work !
 
I suppose there is no remote I can purchase to correct the problem. If that is the case, where do I get the different linkage? Am I stuck with replacing the lower unit?
 
Sometimes people are reluctant to trust expertise !--------------So remove the lower unit and verify that it goes to forward with a DOWN motion of the shift rod.-------------Once you confirm that I will try to coach some more in what to do to correct this !!
