1979 evinrude 35 short shaft.

My 78 long shaft 35 has a bad lower unit. I bought a 79 short shaft lower with thoughts of swapping the long drive shaft into the short shaft unit but short of a jack hammer, I can't pull the drive shaft out of the bad unit to put in the good one. Those are interchangeable I believe. Am I missing a step in removing the drive shaft from the long shaft or is pulling the gears out of the bad one necessary to pull the shaft out. It's locked up pretty tight. Does it have to be in neutral to remove.
 
That's kind of what I was thinking but it's stuck in there good. I put some vice grips on the shaft and tapped them with a small hammer, then got a little more serious about it and put the shaft in the vice and hit the lower unit housing with a dead blow hammer and nothing, it didn't budge. I'm going to disassemble the gear box and see if I can see what's holding it.
