1979 Evinrude 25hp water pump seal question

25905R is the model #. I'm replacing the water pump and the two seals under the pump. On the parts exploded view, it shows (2) of the 321786 seals underneath the pump. No problem there. But with part (#14) it shows another 321786 underneath the water pump cover. But I can't see anywhere to put it. Do I possibly have an updated version of the water pump kit (mine is 395270) that doesn't use that one? The old base that I took off also didn't have a seal on it. My new base is # 330560 and the seal also doesn't fit on top of it either. I also have two O-rings that I don't see where to put. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Could one of the o rings be the one used at the top of the drive shaft to prevent water intrusion where it connects to the engines crankshaft?
 
The 330560 may have come with the seal already in place. The shaft seal there goes in from the top, of course, and keeps water pressure in the pump chamber. O rings should fit top of driveshaft, and possibly the fat one is shift shaft. Be sure to grease splines that engage with crankshaft, or use anti seize.
 
I've seen other kits (395270) that come with an oil seal 321459. But i found a chart that shows that that particular seal has the same outer diameter as the 321786 seal that is too big. So i can't see how it would fit any better. I may have find that chart again and get out my micrometer and just try to order a seal with the correct inner and outer diameters. If one exists.

Or I may have to try 321459 anyway. It definitely looks like a seal needs to go on the top like timguy says.

The old cover is the same part # and had no seal there either. But the water wasn't coming out the tell tale before. Without a seal, I don't see what would keep water from leaking out the top of the cover.

The O-rings are a bit too large for the drive shaft.

Well, I went to two local marinas and emailed marineengine.com and nobody knows. So i guess I'll try the other housing cover in the schematic (#389644) and see if I can fit the seal into that one.
 
Actually, I found a part # 324448 which is a replacement for #389644 and I can see in the ebay photo that it has already has a seal installed underneath the deck of the housing, like the schematic shows. So, hopefully, this gets the job done. Still don't know what the O-rings are for though. But, one thing at a time.
 
The part looks like what i need. I got it back together, but the water pickup tube that hangs down and connects to the impeller housing is just swinging in the breeze basically. Very difficult to line up when re-attaching the lower unit. Any tips for re-alignment?

Oh, and the o-rings were for the plastic sleeve that covers the driveshaft and connects to the top of the impeller housing...and somewhere above.
