1979 Evinrude 100HP Gearbox Problems

Hi I just registered here today in hope that I can get some advice. I have a 1979 Evinrude 100-model number 100999S. A month ago I had it running on the lake full speed and it slipped out of gear, no clunking or anything just went smoothly into neutral. I immediately throttled down and put shifter into neutral and then couldn’t get it back into either forward or reverse. After getting towed back to the launch I took it home and inspected linkages and all seemed fine. Then took it to repair shop where they told me it had lots of metal flakes in the lower unit oil when they drained it. At that point I decided to take it home as I don’t want to spend the money right now for them to tear it apart and diagnose and will wait till spring since I have been spending a lot of time and money restoring this boat (1979 Starcraft 18’ Supersport). My question is this: is it worth spending money on this old motor to have(presumably) one or more gears replaced? It could be several hundred $$. On the other hand new or even good used motors are expensive!! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Your location ?------Remove lower unit.-----Remove water pump.-----Remove bearing housing under the water pump.----What condition is the driveshaft thrust bearing in ???----It does sound like gear / bearing failure occurred.----Used gearcases are plentiful in some areas.

Thanks for the reply. I live in northern Michigan. I have just started looking online for a used gear case and haven’t found anything yet on eBay. Any good sites I can look on?
