Motor is a '79 evinrude 9.9 HP. Model #10924B.
I've had problems with the rope start occasionally and it's cropped up again. The problem is the slot in the bottom cup where the recoil spring sets will bend out then the curled end of the spring slides in and I have to take it all apart to reset everything.
I looked on the parts page and it shows a newer bottom cup available and it looks like each side of that slot is reinforced. That's great, but the price $149 just for the cup seems a bit steep.
Does anyone have a suggestion how to modify my old style cup to prevent the spring from slipping through?
Also, how long is the starter rope supposed to be? One problem might be that my cord is too short. I can feel it bottoming out sometimes and I wonder if that extra force might be flexing it allowing the spring to wiggle through.
